Thirteen Pennies Café is housed inside the Mountain Home Thrift Store. It
offers breakfast and lunch items while providing training and hands-on job experience for youth in the culinary arts training track of Black Mountain Home for Children’s Apprenticeship Program. The café is named for the first financial gift made to the ministry in 1904.

The café offers Black Mountain Home Roast coffee along with breakfast and lunch items such as loaded biscuits, French toast, sandwiches, paninis, and amazing baked goods. The café’s signature coffee, a Honduras roast, is a single-origin, direct trade, specialty grade coffee grown at elevation with an excellent cupping score of 86. Kitchens are often described as gathering places, the heart of a home. We like to think of The Speckled Trout in a similar sense. Located in downtown Blowing Rock— at the corner of Main Street and Highway 221—  is the newly renovated and reinvented restaurant and bottle shop. We explore the roots of Appalachian food and beverage culture, and re-create it in our kitchen by preserving and reviving ingredients of our local heritage. Menus are more than a list of ingredients; they show how people live and what they value. And as the seasons change, so does our menu.

To accompany the celebration of our regional dishes, our beverage program focuses on terroir-driven libations. The term terroir evokes a sense of place, and in our shop this is evident in everything we do. The bottle shop emphasizes traditions of fermentation practices by offering some of the best “home-grown” beers and ciders around. Opened in 2000 by Bernie & Joan Keele, the Keele’s spent their time making Storie Street Grille a hidden gem in the downtown village of Blowing Rock.

At Café Violette, Chef Kyle Martin has created a menu inspired by the Mediterranean coast of France. The Best Cellar Restaurant in Blowing Rock, North Carolina was established in 1975. The original location was in a basement on Main Street, where previous owners sold soups, sandwiches, and new and used books. The name was derived from the fact that the restaurant sold books in a basement, hence The Best Cellar. The Manor House Estate was the elegant home of J. Luther Snyder, the most famous of Chetola’s owners. Snyder purchased Chetola Estate in 1926. Also known as “the Coca Cola King of the Carolinas,” Snyder’s wife held frequent celebrations and parties that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and 1940s.

On July 28, 2012, Chetola officially opened Timberlake’s Restaurant in the historical building, with a menu inspired by world-renowned North Carolina artist and designer Bob Timberlake’s culinary favorites. The restaurant features three dining rooms, an intimate wine room and waterfront dining on the Patio. The charming and warmly outfitted Headwaters Pub is just inside Timberlake’s main entrance.

Bob Timberlake, who is known for creating things of exceptional artistry and imagination, used his deeply rooted love of food as the impetus behind the distinctive menu. From savory shrimp and salads of mountain-grown spinach, to pan-seared duck and roasted Carolina quail, each dish will be one worth savoring. I grew up in Charlotte, NC, and was lucky enough to have Pasta & Provisions in my neighborhood. As a child I was amazed by the fact that when you stopped by, you always saw people making things. This wasn’t food made by machines in a drab factory somewhere far away. It was made with a lot of pride by people in my neighborhood. I moved to Boone to attend Appalachian State, and started working at Stick Boy Bread Company. I noticed many of the same things that I had seen at Pasta & Provisions-that same commitment to quality, from the ingredients to the methods to caliber of the staff. It seemed logical that a town that loved pastries and great bread could use a pasta shop! Next came sandwiches, craft beer, and fine wine. I thought everything was set….until the space next door to us became available. A casual mention to two friends who had been thinking of opening a brewery led to us becoming the tasting room for Booneshine Brewing Company. On July 1, 2015 we poured the first pint of Booneshine IPA! Booneshine has since moved on to a much larger space, needing more room to produce fresh craft beer.

Boone Saloon was born from a desperate need for a watering-hole that was geared for full grown adults. Sure the college kids would come – we are a college town after all. But, we needed a comfortable, clean place where conversation was revered, quality service and food was appreciated, and style was a heavy consideration.

We started with an old white oak tree that we carved out to be the 25 foot, live edge, bar. Then we tore down all the sheetrock and drop ceilings, ripped up the carpet, and let the building show itself. After we built the stage, built an outside covered deck and added our GameChanger Arcade we were ready to go.

Proper is an homage to a Southern upbringing. It is preserving a way of life that includes an honest living, being polite, and eating good food.

The Pedalin’ Pig opened its Banner Elk location in 2014 bringing fresh gourmet flair to some smoky down south favorites. Dan’l Boone Inn has recently been honored by both Southern Living Magazine and Our State Magazine for our country cuisine. In early 2008, Sam and Alyce Ratchford purchased the two-year-old Vidalia from their friend and former co-worker. They quickly focused the menu around North Carolina products, fresh local produce, and expanded the wine list. Vidalia quickly outgrew its original 45 seat capacity prompting an expansion in the winter of 2015. When Vidalia reopened, the Ratchford’s had added seventy-five additional seats, a screened-in, covered porch, a full bar and a wall of wine. Their mission to source locally and provide high-end North Carolina cuisine in a casual, upscale space remains today.

he Red Onion is a local business that was established in 1985 by Danny and Suzette Mauney. Our restaurant is located right across the street from Appalachian State and we serve lunch and dinner seven days a week. Amazingly fresh and delicious! Perfect for lunch or dinner. Everything is cooked to order, takes roughly ten minutes. This is a take out only place. I was home in 10 minutes and the food was still hot and delicious. The staff is friendly. The order was correct. If you get Fajitas, you may want to order more tortillas because you only get two with the meal.

The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees.

Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Macado’s just recently opened its newest location in Winchester, Virginia.
