In the most surprising of places you find the most surprising of things. In the charming mountain town of Andrews, North Carolina, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and guarding the entrance to the Nantahala Gorge, is the town’s first jail. It’s an old rock structure known as a Calaboose, and it is haunted with spirits. Heavenly craft-brewed beer and wine, to be exact.
From our humble beginnings in 2012 as beer lovers with a home brew setup, some mason jars, and a lot of zany friends, a culture of absolute foolery and serious chillness grew. These days, we brew for fun and we brew for our community, and along the way we end up producing totally outstanding craft beer that we’re proud to share with you.
We are Nano brewers having fun and making great beers – one small batch at a time.
Small batch craft brews made with love here on the front porch of Western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Our little city in the clouds expects a lot out of our beer. In order to make sure we produce the best, we constantly experiment and explore new styles and perspectives. With creativity and tradition combined, we are working to bring you the tastes of a finely honed craft.
Hoppy Trout Brewing Company is a brewpub located in Andrews, NC. We opened New Year’s Day of 2016, so we were literally the first brewery to open in NC in 2016. All our beer is brewed on premise which we sell in our pub with some self distribution in immediate area. We brew 1 BBL(barrel) batches at a time, 31 gallons, which classifies us as a nano brewery. We also offer a full-service pizza restaurant featuring a handmade Sicilian style brick oven.
The small batch approach to beer production allows us to take risks with flavors. We are constantly rotating our tap list with new experimental beers as well as maintaining a few flagships we try to always keep on tap. There is nothing we won’t put in beer. We have used the hottest peppers in the world, Himalayan sea salt, and even cake batter. We do our best to source local ingredients when available. We give a local farmer all our spent grain to feed his pigs.
Captain Raleigh Bender was a C&O Canal boatman during the 1800’s, and proprietor of this fine tavern. Since 1936, Captain Bender’s Tavern has fed the hungry, quenched the thirsty, and served loyally, the historic community of Sharpsburg, Maryland. Today we are the best restaurant and bar in Sharpsburg and are a perfect meeting spot for locals, C&O Canal and Antietam Battlefield visitors, and Shepherdstown students.
Join old friends and make new ones at Captain Bender’s Tavern. After a long day at work or school, why not take a break and enjoy great food and drinks? We offer a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and affordable drinks!

Shopping-mall dining room offering creative American eats, oysters & full bar in a hip setting. Reid’s Cafe boasts a beautiful new space, ever-changing seasonal menus & handcrafted cocktails. We love the intentional, the specific, the well-cared-for.
Reid’s Café is a labor of love from Tina Houston, owner of Reid’s Catering Co. which has been established here in the High Country since 1999.
At the base of Grandfather Mountain, Reid’s is centrally located between Banner Elk, Linville, Foscoe, and all the gorgeous Grandfather communities. Just as we value beautiful ingredients in our catering, the café procures the highest quality of ingredients for their seasonal menus. We value the handmade and fashion from scratch details as small as the aioli and dressings we use, to house made focaccias and pastries, slow roasted meats and naturally fermented pickles. We avoid industrially grown and processed foods. We love the intentional, the specific, the well-cared-for.
About our Food
At Reid’s Café & Catering, we serve regional seafood, farm goods from our local friends, amazing coffee from Camp Roasters Coffee of Blowing Rock, as well as loose leaf teas and tisane from Bellocq Tea Atelier, with rustic handmade French pastries. We have all the things you need for lunch, dinner and in between–soups made to order, carefully crafted sandwiches, homemade sides and light, elegant salads, grilled whole fish, oysters on the half shell and hand crafted cocktails. Toward evenings, our emphasis on natural wines, sustainable, traditional, and with minimum chemical additives, compliment the Chefs’ choice of cured meats and cheeses. We have handmade cocktails and beer, too! We serve all these delicious things Monday through Saturday starting at 11am.
About our Space
Reid’s Cafe features re-purposed barn wood, white concrete countertops from BDWG, tables from Big Oak Woodworks, succulent greenery and ferns by Callista Designs and LOVE. Colors are of dark sea and cloud, forest, stone, sky and sunset. The vivacious heart of the cafe resides in Jerry Cantwell’s paintings —exemplary compositions with colorways that resound and subject matter that is uncannily, but joyously soothing.
Furthermore, a bit about Our Goods
In addition to our menu, Reid’s chooses to stock magazines, textiles, specialty goods, and rare finds, that relate to our world-view and way of life. All of our goods are hand-chosen, tasted, considered and proven in their quality, again and again, by our tirelessly exploring staff. They are constantly bringing to our attention some new, or very-old, amazing things we must try, because it is just unlike any other they’ve ever experienced—a Unique Good in the world.
