The Manor House Estate was the elegant home of J. Luther Snyder, the most famous of Chetola’s owners. Snyder purchased Chetola Estate in 1926. Also known as “the Coca Cola King of the Carolinas,” Snyder’s wife held frequent celebrations and parties that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and 1940s.
On July 28, 2012, Chetola officially opened Timberlake’s Restaurant in the historical building, with a menu inspired by world-renowned North Carolina artist and designer Bob Timberlake’s culinary favorites. Before we packed up and left our home in New York, we had been head chefs at two of the highest-rated restaurants in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island, Robert’s in Watermill and World Pie in Bridgehampton. Yet, all the while that we were running our respective kitchens, we kept a small fire burning for the dream of opening our own idea of a great restaurant someday. Our plan was to find the most promising, picturesque town in the country, where the people were varied, smart, good-looking, and hungry for the kind of genuine culinary thing we do.

Paul Alcazar and Jocelyn Yost are the owners and operators of Bodegas, and you can often find one of them in the restaurant at any given time. Paul’s father was from Cuba, and Paul had a great love and appreciation for Cuban food while he was growing up. Paul had always dreamed of opening his own restaurant, and when he and Jocelyn discovered Banner Elk, and the recently renovated Eagles Nest Marketplace, they decided to take the plunge and open Bodegas. He has now turned his dream into a reality, and Bodegas is loved by locals and visitors alike.
Thirteen Pennies Café is housed inside the Mountain Home Thrift Store. It
offers breakfast and lunch items while providing training and hands-on job experience for youth in the culinary arts training track of Black Mountain Home for Children’s Apprenticeship Program. The café is named for the first financial gift made to the ministry in 1904.
The café offers Black Mountain Home Roast coffee along with breakfast and lunch items such as loaded biscuits, French toast, sandwiches, paninis, and amazing baked goods. The Inn was originally built by the Beech Mountain Developers in the 1970’s in a rustic style resembling the great old Inn’s of the European Alps. Since it’s original opening many great restaurants called the Beech Alpen Inn their home. In 2006 the new owners’ Steve, Jane & Fred took the idea further, enhancing the Inn with a new modern kitchen and a new restaurant addition the Mountain view room. Download a book instantaneously. Bills can be viewed and paid (or ignored) with the click of a button. Order a cheeseburger from a person on the other side of a machine and it’s ready in under two minutes (if the line is short enough). There are few aspects of our lives that have been untouched by this ever-present supply of immediate gratification.
So it is no great mystery that BBQ, the ritual of cooking with fire and smoke, is such a highly sought-after prize. It is the driving source of endless competitions, timeless arguments over what is right and what is wrong, and innumerable quests to find the “very best version.” It is a simple matter, putting a metal box or grate over some fire and letting smoke do its work. But there is more to bbq than just cooking meat. Wherever one finds it, behind that pulled pork, sliced brisket, and blistered sausages is a preparation that requires time, patience, and a tremendous amount of love. BBQ is untouched by the hurry of the world. Each weekend we feature FRESH specials that highlight seasonal offerings from our local food purveyors and unique flavors of our chef’s culinary creativity.

Our parents were born and raised in Cuba and unfortunately had to flee their beautiful homeland in 1960 when Castro’s communist regime came into power. They instilled in us their love for their Cuban culture and all that it encompassed–food, music, history, family.
As cousins, we grew up together in Miami, Florida enjoying our Cuban heritage. Destiny brought us all to North Carolina along with our desire to share this delicious and deeply loved cuisine with you. We are using family recipes that have been passed down through many generations.

The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees.
Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Macado’s just recently opened its newest location in Winchester, Virginia.
The already-lengthy menu has been changed and expanded over the years, and several events have grown in popularity, such as the Macado’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Party and the Macado’s Halloween Party. Loyal customers have made Macado’s part of their own traditions as well!
We make nearly everything from scratch, we select our own produce from the WNC Farmer’s Market, and we grill the best burgers in town! We have six local draft beers as well as a great selection of bottled beer and wine. Chef’s Menu additions are ever-changing, and we have a kids menu too!
