Shopping-mall dining room offering creative American eats, oysters & full bar in a hip setting. Reid’s Cafe boasts a beautiful new space, ever-changing seasonal menus & handcrafted cocktails. We love the intentional, the specific, the well-cared-for.

Reid’s Café is a labor of love from Tina Houston, owner of Reid’s Catering Co. which has been established here in the High Country since 1999.

At the base of Grandfather Mountain, Reid’s is centrally located between Banner Elk, Linville, Foscoe, and all the gorgeous Grandfather communities.  Just as we value beautiful ingredients in our catering, the café procures the highest quality of ingredients for their seasonal menus. We value the handmade and fashion from scratch details as small as the aioli and dressings we use, to house made focaccias and pastries, slow roasted meats and naturally fermented pickles. We avoid industrially grown and processed foods. We love the intentional, the specific, the well-cared-for.

About our Food

At Reid’s Café & Catering, we serve regional seafood, farm goods from our local friends, amazing coffee from Camp Roasters Coffee of Blowing Rock, as well as loose leaf teas and tisane from Bellocq Tea Atelier, with rustic handmade French pastries. We have all the things you need for lunch, dinner and in between–soups made to order, carefully crafted sandwiches, homemade sides and light, elegant salads, grilled whole fish, oysters on the half shell and hand crafted cocktails. Toward evenings, our emphasis on natural wines, sustainable, traditional, and with minimum chemical additives, compliment the Chefs’ choice of cured meats and cheeses. We have handmade cocktails and beer, too! We serve all these delicious things Monday through Saturday starting at 11am.

About our Space

Reid’s Cafe features re-purposed barn wood, white concrete countertops from BDWG, tables from Big Oak Woodworks, succulent greenery and ferns by Callista Designs and LOVE. Colors are of dark sea and cloud, forest, stone, sky and sunset. The vivacious heart of the cafe resides in Jerry Cantwell’s paintings —exemplary compositions with colorways that resound and subject matter that is uncannily, but joyously soothing.

Furthermore, a bit about Our Goods

In addition to our menu, Reid’s chooses to stock magazines, textiles, specialty goods, and rare finds, that relate to our world-view and way of life. All of our goods are hand-chosen, tasted, considered and proven in their quality, again and again, by our tirelessly exploring staff. They are constantly bringing to our attention some new, or very-old, amazing things we must try, because it is just unlike any other they’ve ever experienced—a Unique Good in the world.

Well Known Venue (Nick’s) Becomes Highlander’s

highlander noun

Definition of highlander: an inhabitant of a highland.

For over three decades this establishment at the cross roads of state routes 105 & 184 has welcomed locals, visitors, newcomers, and students alike…and all have been made to feel at home. Through over 120 passing seasons this gathering place has become as integral to the landscape as Grandfather Mountain itself.

We  are proud to present a modern re-imaging of this “High Country” tradition: “Highlander’s Grill & Tavern!” Whether you hail from the coast, the mountains, the north, the south, the east or the west, no matter who you are or where you are from…. When You Are Here You Are A Highlander!

The Best Cellar Restaurant in Blowing Rock, North Carolina was established in 1975. The original location was in a basement on Main Street, where previous owners sold soups, sandwiches, and new and used books. The name was derived from the fact that the restaurant sold books in a basement, hence The Best Cellar. Over the years, the menu evolved from sandwiches and soups to the freshest of meats and seafood.

The Best Cellar prides itself on having provided its customers with the finest of food, wine, and service for 30 years. All dishes and desserts are prepared each day on site. The food is our biggest passion. A twist on the ordinary, we are constantly looking for new trends. We don’t limit ourselves to a specific cuisine – we believe all the different cooking styles of the world are equally tasty. We also get a lot of inspiration from Food Network and places we travel to, in and out of the country. We take everyday classics and add a “twist” to make it unique to our style….. from classic southern recipies like the pimento cheese or mountain trout to classic American staples like burgers and Philly cheesesteaks.

Be sure to check out our sister restaurant, Sunny Rock Eggs and Things, located right next door. We serve breakfast with a twist as well! There is food for everyone. We rely on word of mouth. If your enjoyed your experience, please tell your friends!

A restaurant inside a house?  Yes! We are located inside a charming old house that was built in 1904. We have kept everything original to the house as much as possible, which means our space is very unique and smaller than most restaurants you’ve probably been to – our kitchen is smaller than most residential kitchens! With such limited space, we run things a bit differently to be sure that you have a great time here! We are counter-service with waitstaff, so you order and pay at the counter BEFORE finding a table where we will serve you! Having everyone order and pay first means that our limited number of tables are not held up waiting for orders to be taken or checks to be brought out, so even if we are very busy, there WILL be a table available by the time you have ordered. Operating this way, it is very rare that we should ever have to wait for a table to open. For this reason we ask that you please do not reserve tables while the rest of your party is in line.

FROM A ROMANTIC DINNER…

TO A GRAND RECEPTION

Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant began in 1984 at the local VFW. Owner Eileen Gideon named the restaurant “Dutch’s Daughter” in honor of her father Fred “Dutch” Onderdonk. After many successful years at the VFW, Eileen decided to design a restaurant to meet all of the Frederick area’s needs. This was achieved in March of 2000 when she opened our current location. Since then, Dutch’s has continued to serve high-quality food and provide excellent service.

the speckled trout.jpg
922 Main St, Blowing Rock, NC 28605, USA

Kitchens are often described as gathering places, the heart of a home. We like to think of The Speckled Trout in a similar sense. Located in downtown Blowing Rock— at the corner of Main Street and Highway 221—  is the newly renovated and reinvented restaurant and bottle shop. We explore the roots of Appalachian food and beverage culture, and re-create it in our kitchen by preserving and reviving ingredients of our local heritage. Menus are more than a list of ingredients; they show how people live and what they value. And as the seasons change, so does our menu.

To accompany the celebration of our regional dishes, our beverage program focuses on terroir-driven libations. The term terroir evokes a sense of place, and in our shop this is evident in everything we do. The bottle shop emphasizes traditions of fermentation practices by offering some of the best “home-grown” beers and ciders around. In addition, our wines highlight small producers from old world to new.

In the 1950s, The Speckled Trout was a place to stop and fill up your gas tank. Now, you can fill up on fresh mountain trout, soup beans and hoecakes, and wash it down with local farm beer or fresh rosé. Join us at The Speckled Trout for a taste of regional fare and warm hospitality that will keep y’all coming back!

Steak, seafood & other American fare in a European-style inn with mountain views, fireplace & patio. The Alpen Restaurant and Bar in Beech Mountain North Carolina is part of the Beech Alpen Inn. The Inn was originally built by the Beech Mountain Developers in the 1970’s in a rustic style resembling the great old Inn’s of the European Alps. Since it’s original opening many great restaurants called the Beech Alpen Inn their home.  In 2006 the new owners’ Steve, Jane & Fred took the idea further, enhancing the Inn with a new modern kitchen and a new restaurant addition the Mountain view room. The design was strictly guided by the rustic style of the old Inn. The original old Fireplace room has been restored and a cozy Bar was added. The modern Time was not left out. Six large Flat Screen TV’s and also wireless Internet were added, to keep in touch with the world away from the mountains. The AC-System keeps the indoor climate most comfortable on the hottest summer days, a rare feature in the mountains.
