The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees.

Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Macado’s just recently opened its newest location in Winchester, Virginia.

The already-lengthy menu has been changed and expanded over the years, and several events have grown in popularity, such as the Macado’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Party and the Macado’s Halloween Party. Loyal customers have made Macado’s part of their own traditions as well!

In early 2008, Sam and Alyce Ratchford purchased the two-year-old Vidalia from their friend and former co-worker. They quickly focused the menu around North Carolina products, fresh local produce, and expanded the wine list. Vidalia quickly outgrew its original 45 seat capacity prompting an expansion in the winter of 2015. When Vidalia reopened, the Ratchford’s had added seventy-five additional seats, a screened-in, covered porch, a full bar and a wall of wine. Their mission to source locally and provide high-end North Carolina cuisine in a casual, upscale space remains today.

For over 50 years, Dan’l Boone Inn has been serving Boone and the high country delicious homecooked meals, just like you remember at grandma’s house. Our family style meals begin with a salad in the summer and soup in the winter. Three meats and five vegetables are served along with biscuits, preserves, dessert and beverage. A full family style breakfast is served on Saturdays and Sundays.

Boone Saloon was born from a desperate need for a watering-hole that was geared for full grown adults. Sure the college kids would come – we are a college town after all. But, we needed a comfortable, clean place where conversation was revered, quality service and food was appreciated, and style was a heavy consideration.

We started with an old white oak tree that we carved out to be the 25 foot, live edge, bar. Then we tore down all the sheetrock and drop ceilings, ripped up the carpet, and let the building show itself. After we built the stage, built an outside covered deck and added our GameChanger Arcade we were ready to go.

I grew up in Charlotte, NC, and was lucky enough to have Pasta & Provisions in my neighborhood. As a child I was amazed by the fact that when you stopped by, you always saw people making things. This wasn’t food made by machines in a drab factory somewhere far away. It was made with a lot of pride by people in my neighborhood. I moved to Boone to attend Appalachian State, and started working at Stick Boy Bread Company. I noticed many of the same things that I had seen at Pasta & Provisions-that same commitment to quality, from the ingredients to the methods to caliber of the staff. It seemed logical that a town that loved pastries and great bread could use a pasta shop! Next came sandwiches, craft beer, and fine wine. I thought everything was set….until the space next door to us became available. A casual mention to two friends who had been thinking of opening a brewery led to us becoming the tasting room for Booneshine Brewing Company. On July 1, 2015 we poured the first pint of Booneshine IPA! Booneshine has since moved on to a much larger space, needing more room to produce fresh craft beer.

The Manor House Estate was the elegant home of J. Luther Snyder, the most famous of Chetola’s owners. Snyder purchased Chetola Estate in 1926. Also known as “the Coca Cola King of the Carolinas,” Snyder’s wife held frequent celebrations and parties that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and 1940s.

On July 28, 2012, Chetola officially opened Timberlake’s Restaurant in the historical building, with a menu inspired by world-renowned North Carolina artist and designer Bob Timberlake’s culinary favorites. The restaurant features three dining rooms, an intimate wine room and waterfront dining on the Patio. The charming and warmly outfitted Headwaters Pub is just inside Timberlake’s main entrance.

Bob Timberlake, who is known for creating things of exceptional artistry and imagination, used his deeply rooted love of food as the impetus behind the distinctive menu. From savory shrimp and salads of mountain-grown spinach, to pan-seared duck and roasted Carolina quail, each dish will be one worth savoring. The Best Cellar Restaurant in Blowing Rock, North Carolina was established in 1975. The original location was in a basement on Main Street, where previous owners sold soups, sandwiches, and new and used books. The name was derived from the fact that the restaurant sold books in a basement, hence The Best Cellar. At Café Violette, Chef Kyle Martin has created a menu inspired by the Mediterranean coast of France. When Dorothy and Krista met over the summer of 2018, they had two things in common right off the bat: the love of baking and being from families of four sisters. Hatched as a grand idea between sets at a late night gig, musicians and former band mates Andy Gibbon and Josh Gibbs decided they should provide the Asheville area with truly delicious, locally roasted, organic coffee.

Black Mountain Golf Course is located at the foot of the beautiful Black Mountain Range in Western North Carolina. The 6,215yd par 71 course has a front nine originally designed by Donald Ross and is home to the famous 747yd, par 6 17th hole, at one time the longest hole in the world.

Our parents were born and raised in Cuba and unfortunately had to flee their beautiful homeland in 1960 when Castro’s communist regime came into power. They instilled in us their love for their Cuban culture and all that it encompassed–food, music, history, family.

​As cousins, we grew up together in Miami, Florida enjoying our Cuban heritage. Destiny brought us all to North Carolina along with our desire to share this delicious and deeply loved cuisine with you. We are using family recipes that have been passed down through many generations.

Coach House Seafood and Steak is a family owned and operated restaurant. We pride ourselves in providing ample portions of quality seafood at reasonable prices. People love brunch. People love bakeries. So we did both. Located in the picturesque town of Black Mountain, NC. Open Oven Brunch and Bakery is serving up food made right. Benedicts topped with white wine rosemary hollandaise on homemade sourdough English muffins to sandwiches served on Artisan bread with a side of house cut fries. We do our best to provide antibiotic and hormone free meats, wild caught seafood, and baked goods using whole grain  flour. Wake up with coffee from Dynamite Roasting or turn it up a notch and try a mimosa! We have an outdoor patio for seasonal dining and offer carry out.

A restaurant inside a house?  Yes! We are located inside a charming old house that was built in 1904. We have kept everything original to the house as much as possible, which means our space is very unique and smaller than most restaurants you’ve probably been to – our kitchen is smaller than most residential kitchens! With such limited space, we run things a bit differently to be sure that you have a great time here! We are counter-service with waitstaff, so you order and pay at the counter BEFORE finding a table where we will serve you! Having everyone order and pay first means that our limited number of tables are not held up waiting for orders to be taken or checks to be brought out, so even if we are very busy, there WILL be a table available by the time you have ordered. Operating this way, it is very rare that we should ever have to wait for a table to open. For this reason we ask that you please do not reserve tables while the rest of your party is in line.

Chef and owner Mark Henegan has been in the restaurant industry for over 30 years. Order a cheeseburger from a person on the other side of a machine and it’s ready in under two minutes (if the line is short enough). There are few aspects of our lives that have been untouched by this ever-present supply of immediate gratification.

So it is no great mystery that BBQ, the ritual of cooking with fire and smoke, is such a highly sought-after prize. It is the driving source of endless competitions, timeless arguments over what is right and what is wrong, and innumerable quests to find the “very best version.” It is a simple matter, putting a metal box or grate over some fire and letting smoke do its work. But there is more to bbq than just cooking meat. Wherever one finds it, behind that pulled pork, sliced brisket, and blistered sausages is a preparation that requires time, patience, and a tremendous amount of love. BBQ is untouched by the hurry of the world. Since the discovery of fire from our ancestors on down, very little has been touched and, as is the case with the best of it, the tradition has not been touched at all. What was once necessity has become the ultimate luxury. One can sit down at a bar or outside a shack or in their very own homes and enjoy a feast that took half a day to cook, a week to prepare, and a millennium to perfect.

From obtaining our food products to hand-kneading dough, making bread daily and offering fresh food options, we focus on the ritual of taking life from the world around us and presenting it to you. This ritual of nourishment from farm to table is one that all Americans took part in until about 75 years ago.

To honor this tradition we follow a few simple rules as we prepare food for you. Whenever we can, we buy locally-grown, seasonal, organic produce and meats. We use farmers and farm cooperatives or family-run operations as our primary suppliers for our flowers, vegetables, fruits and herbs. We use feta and goat cheese from local creameries, brew Dynamite Roasting Company Coffee and carry local microbrews from around our region. We have a large garden that supplies us seasonally with fresh basil, edible flowers and herbs as well as greens, peppers, root vegetables and other produce. Every day we make homemade soups and breads for the day. You’ll also find homemade daily desserts from our FRESH chef’s and local confectioners’ creations. Each weekend we feature FRESH specials that highlight seasonal offerings from our local food purveyors and unique flavors of our chef’s culinary creativity.

At FRESH we offer an alternative to the processed food delivery system that has become the staple of the modern diet. Here, you will sit down to eat a meal together in the tradition of our parents and grandparents and taste the difference of food that is grown, artfully prepared and served by people who live right here and are part of our community.

Milton’s Black Mountain inside The Monte Vista Hotel is open for dine-in and takeaway service! Our dining room and bar are open for dinner currently Wednesday through Sunday for dinner from 5pm to 9pm.

Maggie B’s is Weaverville’s first ever wine and specialty food store.   But, despite what most people think, Maggie B is not the owner. She is actually Elspeth and Andy’s 13-year old, yellow Labrador retriever. In her honor, we do offer dog parking outside, refreshments (water bowl), and doggie treats. So, if you’re just walking around downtown Weaverville, or getting ready to take your pooch on a hike, stop in and grab some treats for yourself and your four legged friend!

Maggie B’s sells wine, beer, meats, cheeses, wine accessories, and a little of everything else.  Sandwiches, salads, soup, and small plates are offered daily.  They also offer a great selection of wine and beer by the glass.  We carry wines from smaller vineyards that you are not going to find at the grocery store. The wines are from all over the world: South Africa, Argentina, France, New Zealand, and more. You will also find a wide selection of organic wines, which can be beneficial for people who have problems with the preservatives in wine.

Tommy’s Family Restaurant is a family style restaurant. We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Open 7 am – 9 pm seven days a week.

We make nearly everything from scratch, we select our own produce from the WNC Farmer’s Market, and we grill the best burgers in town! We have six local draft beers as well as a great selection of bottled beer and wine. Chef’s Menu additions are ever-changing, and we have a kids menu too!

Before we packed up and left our home in New York, we had been head chefs at two of the highest-rated restaurants in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island, Robert’s in Watermill and World Pie in Bridgehampton.  Yet, all the while that we were running our respective kitchens, we kept a small fire burning for the dream of opening our own idea of a great restaurant someday.  Our plan was to find the most promising, picturesque town in the country, where the people were varied, smart, good-looking, and hungry for the kind of genuine culinary thing we do.
